OVERVIEW: Because AP Literature and Composition is a college-level class, students will be asked to complete college-level coursework. In preparation, we are assigning specific mandatory work which must be completed by the first day of class in August.

Required Reading for the 2019-2020 school year:

This summer, we will be reading Khaled Hosseini's 2003 award-winning novel The Kite Runner. We will commence the 2019-2020 school year working closely with this text.

We recommend that you purchase your own copy of this novel for your own ease of annotating. Copies are available for check out with the textbook clerk at the end of May. Read the book and enjoy the act of reading. Annotate those elements of the text that stand out to you-- that you find remarkable. Use post-its, or, if it's your own copy, write directly in the book. Your annotations will be scored when we return to school in August.

Suggested Reading to Prepare for the Upcoming Year

We will be reading the following pieces of literature next year in AP Literature and Composition. You may want to read them during the summer when you can do so at your leisure. Also, you can read any books from the ERHS HONORS OUTSIDE READING LIST, any of which can be used on the Open-ended AP Essay Test. We will read much short literature and many poems, as well, in class. Pick up an anthology of each - or find them online - and enjoy reading this summer.

Oedipus Rex

Death of a Salesman

Heart of Darkness

Hamlet

Doll's House

King Lear
