12th Grade

Senior Year

You're now in your last year of high school, and what a busy year this is going to be! This is the year for action and to make final decisions about college and your future. Please review the checklist below for helpful tips.

Fall Semester
  • Standardized tests: Register and take the ACT, SAT, and/or SAT subject tests if you didn't do so during junior year. Be sure you request that your test scores be sent to the schools of your choice. Please note the UC and CSU will not use the SAT or ACT scores for admissions but will use if submitted for placement in math and English courses. NCAA requires athletes to take the test.
  • For more information or to sign up for these tests, please go to the SAT or ACT websites. It is your responsibility to sign up for the test. Fee waivers are available by submitting a request on the ERHS college and career website.
  • Log into your CaliforniaColleges.edu account: Review the career/ personality inventories you have taken throughout high school. Explore the career, college, and financial aid sections to help assist your decisions in planning your future.
  • Letters of recommendation: Ensure you get those 2-3 letters from your teacher/counselor/coach/administrator/etc. Give them 2-4 weeks to complete your recommendation. Give them each a Brag Sheet about yourself to help them write a personalized letter to your strengths.
  • Apply to colleges/universities: UC applications open on August 1st and CSU applications open on October 1st. The deadline for both systems is November 30th. Private colleges/universities vary in their deadlines. Several private colleges use the Common Application. This application opens on August 1st.
  • Meet with your counselor: Talk to them about the colleges you want to apply to and have them help you gather all your application materials together. Be sure to ask for your transcripts to be sent to your desired schools.
  • College fairs: The College & Career Center will have many colleges and military branches visit during this semester. Be sure to check the college and career website for the schedule. The admissions representatives will usually be on campus during both lunches.
  • Financial aid: The FAFSA application opens on October 1st. Start filling out the application as far as you can. You'll need your social security number and your parents/guardian's tax return information. Please see your school counselor if you need assistance. In the upcoming months, we will have various workshops to help you and your parent/guardian fill out the FAFSA. Also, start looking out for local and general scholarships! You may even begin to apply to many of them. If you do not have a social security number and are an eligible California AB540 student, please complete the CA Dream Act application.

Spring Semester
  • Financial aid: The FAFSA priority deadline is March 2nd, so be sure to finalize your application by then! The final deadline is June 30th. Apply for various scholarships. The ERHS scholarship deadline is in February.
  • Create your WebGrants 4 Students:this account will let students check the status of their state grants, and take necessary steps to secure their aid.
  • Check your Cal Kids qualifications: CalKIDS is a program that helps children in California get access to higher education, especially those from traditionally underserved communities. Enrollment in CalKIDS is automatic. Eligible beneficiaries are identified by the California Department of Public Health and the California Department of Education. No action or financial commitment is required of families to participate.
  • Keep up your grades: You're in the last stretch of high school and now you're admitted into a college. Make sure you keep your grades up -- it is possible for the university to revoke your admissions if you fall below a certain grade.
  • College notifications: Colleges/Universities will start sending out your application decisions. Decide on which college/university you will accept the admissions for. Notify the schools of your decision by May 1st. Please be sure to check your college accounts as they will provide housing deadlines, scholarship opportunities, and more.
  • Complete the paperwork for the college you'll attend: You'll need to schedule orientation sessions, your first semester classes, figure out your housing, send in your final transcript, and complete other necessary documents. Be sure to complete them all by their deadlines. Or you admission can be revoked.
